People mention it to a neighbor, leave, and come home to a porch full of mail and a post that said the house was empty.
Why This Happens

Frequently Asked Questions
Is telling a neighbor the same as a hold?
No. This mail hold checklist starts with the postal service hold. A neighbor is only a backup.
When should I start it?
Before the first day you cannot collect mail. A day early is safer than a day late.
What about packages?
Pause or redirect them in each shipper account. A mail hold does not stop every truck.
Can I post that I am away?
Do not. Tell one trusted person if you must. The empty-house announcement is the mistake.
